Why Do Dental Implants Fail?
If your dental implants have failed, it may be due to one of the following issues:
- An infection known as peri-implantitis may have occurred, significantly damaging the tissues that the implant posts are relying on for support.
- The dental implant posts may have been unable to fuse with your jawbone.
- The implant posts may have been damaged after you suffered a blow to your mouth.
Symptoms of Failed Dental Implants
It should be noted that dental implant failure can happen at any time, whether that means just a little bit after the implants have been placed or years down the line. No matter when the failure occurs, though, you may notice the following symptoms:
- Discomfort: While it’s not unusual for dental implants to cause a little soreness once they have been placed, prolonged or severe pain is typically cause for concern.
- Looseness: If a dental implant feels loose, the issue could potentially lie with the restoration or the implant post itself.
- Symptoms of Infection: Bleeding and swelling often indicate that an infection has occurred around your dental implants.
How Dental Implant Salvage Works
When you get to our office, we’ll ask about your symptoms and take a look at your mouth. Our goal will be to figure out what the underlying issue is so that it can be dealt with appropriately. We’ll try to save your dental implants whenever possible, but they might have to be taken out (and possibly replaced later) in specific situations, such as if the tissue in the area has suffered from severe damage of some kind.
