What Is Crown Lengthening & Recontouring?

Crown lengthening and recontouring is a simple procedure in which the gum tissue is reshaped to show more of the natural tooth structure. This is completed when a tooth is decayed, broken below the gumline, or simply has insufficient crown height. In these cases, there might not be enough tooth structure to accommodate restorations. This procedure gives the patient teeth that are the ideal length and shape to complement their smile.

The Crown Lengthening & Recontouring Process

Before the procedure begins, your periodontist will start by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area. This way, you will be perfectly comfortable for the duration of your procedure. Next, they will remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth enamel. Your gumline will be sculpted and shaped to make room for your new restoration(s).

After the procedure, you may experience some soreness and inflammation for a few days. It’s important that you closely follow your aftercare instructions to make your recovery as quick and comfortable as possible. You might be prescribed painkillers and/or antibiotics to further relieve discomfort and prevent infection.
