Having too much gum tissue and not enough visible enamel can cause your smile to appear “gummy.” While this isn’t usually harmful, it can take away from one’s appearance and confidence. It can also make it more difficult to receive needed restorations, like dental crowns. These are good enough reasons to enhance your smile with aesthetic crown lengthening and recontouring. By reshaping the gumline, we can make room for new dental crowns while giving you a more proportionate smile. Contact us to schedule your consultation!

Crown lengthening and recontouring is a simple procedure in which the gum tissue is reshaped to show more of the natural tooth structure. This is completed when a tooth is decayed, broken below the gumline, or simply has insufficient crown height. In these cases, there might not be enough tooth structure to accommodate restorations. This procedure gives the patient teeth that are the ideal length and shape to complement their smile.

Before the procedure begins, your periodontist will start by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area. This way, you will be perfectly comfortable for the duration of your procedure. Next, they will remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth enamel. Your gumline will be sculpted and shaped to make room for your new restoration(s).
After the procedure, you may experience some soreness and inflammation for a few days. It’s important that you closely follow your aftercare instructions to make your recovery as quick and comfortable as possible. You might be prescribed painkillers and/or antibiotics to further relieve discomfort and prevent infection.

There are various benefits of crown lengthening and recontouring. Here are just some of the most prominent ones.
